Equipment

  • Cast iron skillet or griddle
  • Spatula
  • Mixing bowl
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Butter knife
  • Paper towels

Ingredients
  

  • 1 lb ground beef 80/20 blend
  • 1 large yellow onion thinly sliced
  • 8 slices of rye bread
  • 8 slices of Swiss or American cheese
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tbsp oil vegetable or canola
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste

Instructions
 

  • Heat oil in a skillet on medium heat.
  • Add onions, cook until deeply golden (15 minutes).
  • Season onions with salt, then remove from skillet.
  • Form ground beef into four oval patties.
  • Season both sides with salt and pepper.
  • Cook patties in skillet, 3-4 minutes per side.
  • Remove patties and wipe skillet clean.
  • Butter one side of each bread slice evenly.
  • Layer sandwich: bread, cheese, patty, onions, cheese.
  • Top with another slice, buttered side out.
  • Cook sandwich on medium heat until golden brown.
  • Flip gently and toast the other side.
  • Cook until cheese is fully melted.
  • Slice and serve warm for best flavor.

Notes

  1. Use rye bread for that classic flavor.
  2. Caramelize onions slowly for best taste.
  3. Don’t press down on the sandwich while cooking.
  4. Use 80/20 ground beef for juicy patties.
  5. Let sandwiches rest before slicing to avoid mess.
